Author: G. Convertino for the Municipality of Lecce

Location: Lecce. Italy

Dimension: 241 km2

Year: 2022-2024

In 2024, the city of Lecce will successfully adopt a new urban plan after 25 years and three previous unsuccessful attempts. This achievement required a deep understanding of the local geography and its existing resources, as the area is rich in natural, anthropic, and interconnected landscape systems. Given that the city anticipates nearly zero population growth, there is no need for expansion. Instead, the plan focuses on transforming and recognizing the intrinsic values of the places within Lecce to enhance habitability and attract new economic activities and investments.

The plan operates on multiple levels, and the key elements include:
· Valuing Natural Resources: The system of wedges and green connections around the city and connecting to the coast preserves and enhances Lecce’s natural assets. The plan aims to improve the quality of life for residents and attract tourism.
· Heritage and Historical Sites: Protecting and promoting Lecce’s historical and cultural sites will not only preserve the city’s identity but also create opportunities for the cultural industry and educational initiatives.
· Sustainable Development: With an emphasis on sustainability, the urban plan includes strategies for eco-friendly infrastructure and green energy plants, aligning with modern environmental standards.
· Economic Revitalization: By leveraging the city’s unique characteristics, the plan aims to stimulate economic growth through new business ventures and investment opportunities without expanding the urban footprint.
· Community and Habitability: Enhancing public spaces and community facilities to improve the overall habitability of Lecce, ensuring that the city’s transformation benefits current and future residents.

This urban plan represents a shift. Lecce is a city with great potential and resources to be illuminated. It focuses on qualitative improvements, making Lecce a model for sustainable development.
